Conversion Discovery 3 to Discovery 4 Front

There are several ways to visually change the Discovery on the front. The most frequently requested option is certainly the conversion of the Discovery 3 to the Discovery 4 or Discovery 4 facelift look.

Unfortunately, the conversion – depending on how complete it is to be – is not entirely cost-effective, as the headlights of the Discovery 3 differ in size from those of the Discovery 4 and also from those of the Discovery 4 Facelift. As a result, when the headlights are changed, unsightly gaps are created between the headlight and various trim parts, for which there are also (as far as we know) no covers on the market. However, if the headlights are to be replaced as well, extensive modifications are necessary.

 

So if a conversion is to be carried out, there are these two main possibilities:

1. Conversion without replacing the headlamp*
2. Conversion with headlight replacement

*There is a special solution to variant 1, you can also change parts inside the headlight to change its appearance but at the same time keep the geometry of the housing.

 

We would like to go into this topic in more detail here, as this variant is the most cost-effective and at the same time already achieves an extremely good result.

You can see an example of this in these two pictures. Here a Discovery 3 was changed to a Discovery 4 facelift design without changing the headlights.

What do we need for the conversion:

•  Yellow turn signal bulb
• Some time and skill for the lamp conversion
• Lamp grids
  • is of course not mandatory, but we recommend the lamp grids, because this gives the whole design a harmonious look and hides the headlight a little bit, so that only the professional will notice the differences
  • Link to the aftermarket grids and to the original LR grids
  • Matching grilles for the rear from the aftermarket and original

The grill can be changed without any tools in less than 5 minutes, because it is simply clipped. To do this, open the hood, release the retaining clips and pull it out with a bold jerk.

Then you have to remove the headlights. This can also be removed without tools. You only have to pull up a retaining clip on the outside and loosen a clip and then you can unplug the headlight plug and pull out the headlight.

Now the real work on the headlight begins. On the headlight itself you first remove the rear cover with the screws. Afterwards you have to pull out the clipped front windshield. The easiest way to do this is to warm up the headlight in an oven. We recommend 40°C-50°C, then the clips become a bit softer and easier to deform and do not break off so fast. Once the headlight is apart, you can remove the yellow lens and simply reassemble the headlight without it in reverse order.

Then of course you have to insert the yellow blinker light and reinstall the headlight, and the conversion is finished.

 

The only (known to us) alternative to this light variant is the complete replacement of the headlights, the front bumper and also the side fenders – including the corresponding painting work.

Overall possibilities:

• Discovery 3 grill is to be converted to D4/D4+FL, headlights are retained
• Discovery 3 Grill should be converted to D4 / D4 + FL, headlights should be modified and retained – see above
• Discovery 3 entire front should be completely converted to Discovery 4 or Discovery 4 Facelift
• Discovery 4 grill and headlights are to be converted to Discovery 4 Facelift
• entire front of the Discovery 4 is to be completely rebuilt to Discovery 4 Facelift

 

If the front of the D3 is changed completely to the front of the D4, these parts are required:
